(1st grade BTP) The History of Home Plugs

Read the following story and answer the questions (part 1: open questions, part 2: true or false)

The History of Home Plugs

The modern home plug, also known as the electrical socket or outlet, has gone through significant evolution since its invention. Before the 20th century, homes were not equipped with electrical systems. Lighting was provided by candles or gas lamps, and there were no appliances that required electricity.

In the early 1900s, as electricity became more widespread, the first home plugs were developed. These early plugs were simple designs with exposed wires, and they were not standardized, which often led to electrical accidents. People would often hardwire their devices directly to the power source, a process that was both inconvenient and dangerous.

It wasn’t until 1904 that Harvey Hubbell, an American inventor, patented the first detachable plug. His invention allowed appliances to be connected and disconnected from the power supply easily and safely. This design improved household safety significantly and made it easier for consumers to use electric devices.

By the mid-20th century, most countries had developed their own standard plug and socket systems, making it easier to use electrical appliances across different regions. In the modern day, different types of plugs are used around the world, but they all follow safety standards to prevent electrical hazards. Grounding systems and insulation have further improved electrical safety, ensuring that homes today can power multiple devices efficiently and securely.
